CGS: Children’s response

The other day, I presented the International Presence (Good Shepherd) work to a 7 year old and 8 year old.  We somehow got to talking about how mass is celebrated in different parts of the world and that in China, some people celebrate mass covertly as it is against the law to do so (I didn’t get into how some priests in China are not “recognised” by the Vatican and all that.  It would’ve been too much for them).  The 8 year old responded, “How can something so good be against the law?”

That really took my breath away.  We don’t know what is happening within each child, that the “inner teacher”  is mysteriously at work.  We never “teach” the child that mass is “so good”.  Everything is indirect.  Superficially, this child is constantly on the go – you wouldn’t really know if he is taking your presentations in (although after these 3 years of doing this, I am finally beginning to know better).  And yet – he comes up with this response!

And last night – during prayer, my five-year old exclaimed, “Jesus is the Good Shepherd and we are his sheep!” I asked him who told him that and he said, “I realised it myself”.  How wonderful!!!

This is why I do what I do…..  To help children get there themselves but I just need to remember to always give them space to do so….
